Roll Grinding Controller
Over the years, Jubilee have designed and produced many roll grinding control systems for the paper and rubber industries. These rollers require that their diameter in the centre be very slightly larger than at the ends (referred to as a crown). The crown profile varies with the application. It is usually derived from a cosine curve and close compliance is paramount.
The amount of crown applied to a roll is usually very small. A difference of less than 100 microns is typical for a 4 metre roll. Our controller can be programmed with any required profile (cosine, compound cosine, circular, parallel etc.), and then have a three stage finishing program to rough cut, medium and super-finish the roll being ground.
The grinding controller uses an encoder to measure the position of the grinding wheel along the length of the roll, and a stepper motor to position the grinding wheel to less than 1 micron accuracy, better than one thousandth of a millimetre!
Another mode of operation in our controller that required extensive design work is fully automatic current control. This mode closely mimics the way that operators have manually re-ground rolls for many years; maintaining a constant load current on the grinding wheel motor, so the regrind very closely follows the original profile on the roller.
